Most of us are affected by mental illness—some because of their own diagnoses, some because a close family member has an illness, and many more because they regularly interact with people who have mental disorders. Churches are the number one place people go for help with addressing a mental health problem, yet many church leaders do not know how to respond, or fail to recognize the opportunity, to provide critical ministry. Sharing stories, research, and practical ideas, Dr. Matthew Stanford and Amy Simpson provide understanding for church leaders and insight on how all churches can help.
Learning Objectives
Participants will:
1. Understand that many church leaders (pastors and others) are on the front lines of mental healthcare and face an important, professional obligation and ministry opportunity
2. Identify how living with mental illness affects many individuals and families who need help and support
3. Explore how commonly church leaders are providing “help” that is not helpful, or potentially harmful, and learn specific ways churches can effectively respond to mental illness in their congregations and communities
