This two-day (13-hour) course creatively utilizes an interactive educational format. Participants will engage in group discussion, individual and group exercises, interactive lecture, observation of videos, and practice through role-plays. This intensive will enhance an individual’s ability to provide an effective emotional and spiritual care ministry with survivors in disaster, emergency, trauma, and crisis settings.

Abstract
Providing effective emotional and spiritual care to individuals, families, and communities following critical incidents and in times of crisis requires special training, skills, and understanding of the unique role of the crisis responder. This two-day course trains participants in the fundamental principles of spiritual and psychological first aid (SPFA). Care provided in SPFA is defined as a compassionate and supportive presence designed to mitigate acute distress, assess needs, provide essential supportive care, and link with other support systems as needed for ongoing spiritual, emotional, and mental healthcare.

Jennifer Cisney Ellers, M.A., is a professional counselor, life coach, crisis response trainer, author and speaker. She conducts training, counseling, and coaching in the field of grief, crisis, and trauma through the Institute for Compassionate Care and is an approved instructor for the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation, teaching several CISM courses. Jennifer also provides divorce coaching, training, and speaking through Emerge Victorious, a ministry for women rebuilding their lives after divorce. She is the co-author of The First 48 Hours: Spiritual Caregivers as First Responders, with her husband, Dr. Kevin Ellers, and Emerge Victorious: A Woman’s Transformational Guide after Her Divorce, with Sandra Dopf Lee.
